Uxia Cambarro (pronounced "u-shee-a") is a young Deep One hybrid and Priestess of the Esoteric Order of Dagon in the Spanish coastal settlement of Imboca. She's the great-granddaughter of Captain Orpheus Cambarro, who brought the Dagon church to Imboca in the late 19th century.

Biology[]

Like most of Imboca's Deep Ones, Uxia has a curious physiology which blends piscine and cephalopod traits. She has gill slits opening on her torso and a pair of long tentacles in place of legs. Curiously, though, she doesn't seem to have the typical web between fingers. On land, she is bound to a wheelchair, but underwater she is a skilled swimmer like all of her race.

History[]

When Uxia's half-brother Paul Marsh (a.k.a. Pablo Cambarro, who was at the point unaware of his ancestry) came to Imboca, Uxia saved him from being sacrificed like the other outsiders by choosing him as her mate and lover. Paul was deeply disturbed when he first met Uxia, recognizing her from several dreams he had in which she took form of a mermaid or other sea creature. He later killed several Deep Ones trying to escape from Imboca, but was ultimately unable to save his girlfriend Barbara, who was to be impregnated by Dagon himself in a religious ritual.

After seeing Barbara taken away by the huge sea creature, Paul attempted suicide by setting himself on fire. Uxia jumped on him and dropped him into the sea water, saving his life. As his gill slits started to work and he remembered his dreams in which Uxia appeared before him, Paul finally accepted his ancestry and her love.

Notes[]

  • Traditionally, Deep Ones have been depicted as piscine humanoids, without tentacles. However, in "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", it's suggested that the Deep Ones worship Cthulhu and are well aware of R'lyeh and the prophecy relating to the old god. This is made even more explicit in the movie Dagon, in which we see them chanting about Cthulhu. Another of Lovecraft's tales, "At the Mountains of Madness", describes an ancient race of alien octopus-like creatures which worship Cthulhu, so it's possible that the octopus creatures were allies of the Deep Ones. If that's true, perhaps Uxia and her relatives' biology is a result of having some alien ancestry in their Deep One lineage. In other words, they could be Deep One/Spawn of Cthulhu hybrids.
