A Varme Tyv is a cold-blooded species of Wesen: a liminal being which spends most of its time in human form, and shifts into its real form either voluntarily or involuntarily.
Biology[]
In their natural form, members of this species are reptilian humanoids with ophidian features, long fangs and glowing eyes. Unable to produce heat on their own, they must rely on human heat to survive and avoid freezing to death, even if that means literally stealing the heat from unsuspecting victims, which they do by biting them on the shoulder and absorbing all warmth from their bodies. The victims of such attacks are found frozen solid, with literal frostbites on their shoulders, marking the place where they've been bitten.
Like snakes, Varme Tyv congregate by the dozens and settle in a warm place (deemed a hibernaculum) to hibernate through the winter. Any Varme Tyv who fails to get to the hibernaculum in time will need to attack human victims to steal their heat; and failing to do that will result in the Varme Tyv soon finding itself frozen to death. Even keeping them in room temperature won't be enough, as they can't process ambient heat. They specifically need body heat from others to survive. It's been stated that they could freeze to death next to a campfire.
