Vivillon is a Bug/Flying-type Pokémon species native to the region of Kalos. Its larval stage is known as Scatterbug, and its pupal stage is known as Spewpa, both of which are pure Bug-types.
Biology[]
Vivillon is a butterfly-like Pokémon with colorful wing patterns which differ between populations, with at least 20 different phenotypes known.
Scatterbug[]
Members of this species start life as Scatterbug, a dark-grey caterpillar-like larva with a proportionally large head. Its body has three segments, each containing a pair of short conical legs. A ruff of white hair separates its head from its torso. Three bristles grow on top of its head, which also contains a pair of large oval brown eyes with square pupils, and a mouth which appears to contain a single triangular teeth, resembling an incisor.
Scatterbug is also known as the "Scatterdust Pokémon", due to its defense mechanism. Its entire body is covered in poisonous black powder which can be released onto its predators, such as bird Pokémon, to induce paralysis. This same powder also serves to regulate its body temperature and allows it to adapt itself to several climates.
Spewpa[]
The second stage, Spewpa, has most of its body covered in a fluffy white mantle, with a few square-shaped colorful scales in it. It is still known as the "Scatterdust Pokémon" due to its ability to spew powder for defense.
Like many pupal-stage bug-types, Spewpa is not very active, and spends most of its time hidden in the shadows amidst thick vegetation. When threatened by a predator, it bristles its fur to appear larger and less appetizing, and its body becomes so rigid as to be impervious to the beaks of its avian foes.
Vivillon[]
Now nicknamed the "Scale Pokémon" due to its lepidopteran wings, Vivillon stands about 1.2 meters in height (which is four times larger than its previous stages), and its body is black and grey in coloration. Its large glossy eyes appear to be pixelated, just like the colorful scales on its wings, which form different patterns depending on the local topography and weather. Unlike most insects, Vivillon has only four limbs, consisting of a pair of short arms and a pair of longer legs, both digitless.
