Volbeat is a Bug-type Pokémon species and the male counterpart of Illumise. Wild populations of this species have been identified in the regions of Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos.
Biology[]
Volbeat and Illumise are medium-sized humanoid beetle-like creatures, and are able to fly in spite of their very small wings. The two can be distinguished by their color palettes and the shape of their antennae, but mostly because Volbeat possesses a bioluminescent organ on its abdomen, which Illumise lacks.
At night, Volbeat produces flashes of light of variable intensity to communicate with others of its species, and is attracted by the aroma produced by Illumise. It is known to form swarms which collaborate to produce luminous geometric shapes in the night sky. As it requires clean water to live, it will move to a new nest if the nearby ponds are polluted.
In purely biological terms, Volbeat is nothing more than the male form of Illumise. This is proven by the fact that the latter produces eggs containing either Illumise (if female) or Volbeat (if male), even if bred with an unrelated Pokémon of its same egg group. Similarly, a Volbeat can breed with the genderless Ditto, and the resulting eggs will contain either Illumise (if female) or Volbeat (if male).
