A Winged Unicorn; often erroneously known as an Alicorn; is a chimeric creature combining features of a Unicorn and Pegasus, due to having wings and a horn in the middle of the forehead. In reality, the word "alicorn" merely means either the horn of a unicorn or the material that the horn is made of.
Like the Hippogriff, the Winged Unicorn seems to be a fictional creation, and has little to no basis in actual mythology.
History[]
The first depiction of the Winged Unicorn is in middle of the 6th century B.C.[1]
Later the Winged Unicorn was popularized by the fantasy author Piers Anthony naming his winged unicorn an Alicorn.
Winged Unicorns are the offspring of Pegasus and a Unicorn and as such has aspects both mythical creatures. The Pegasus was used to transport lightning bolts up to Zeus and grew a strong affinity to lightning. Winged Unicorns have been known to harness this energy.[2]
