Zuul, a.k.a. the Gatekeeper, is a hellhound-like entity, a servant of Gozer alongside Vinz Clortho, and was worshiped as a demigod circa 6,000 BC by the Hittites, the Sumerians and the Mesopotamians.
While both Zuul and Vinz Clortho are capable of crossing into the human realm and possessing human bodies, both of them need to get together and perform a passionate ritual to open the gate to their native world and release their master.
History[]
Vinz Clortho first appeared to Dana Barrett when she opened her refrigerator and saw the extradimensional realm where Gozer and the terror dogs dwell. The demonic creature spoke the name of his mate, Zuul; frightening Dana and prompting her to seek help from the Ghostbusters.
Zuul later possessed Dana while Vinz Clortho possessed Louis Tully, and both came together to open the gate for Gozer.

- When Vinz Clortho talks about some of Gozer's previous appearances, he mentions that "during the third reconciliation of the Meketrex supplicants, they chose a new form for him, that of a giant Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day". The use of the word "zuuls" in the plural suggests that it might be the name of a type of creature rather than an individual, or possibly something akin to a surname or title.
- The real life ankylosaur species Zuul crurivastator, described in 2017, was named after this creature.
